I’m Not Harry Potter Notes

Last summer I filmed a short called Bonding Time. The concept was simple, a group of four, bro, friends create an elaborate situation where one of the friends acts like a secret agent, kicks some ass, and as a result gets with the girl he was on a date with. All the while, it was all set up and planned by his group of friends. I wanted to do a series where there was a spy date, a harry potter date, a national treasure date, etc…
This is a version of the Harry Potter date. In this posts I like to critique myself, so don’t take this the wrong way…people reading. I think all my ideas are genius, hilarious, and original, but sometimes they just don’t come out right. In this case, we were a bit rushed. I didn’t bring a tripod, and the script was only halfway written. I think everyone did a great job. Annie had a great performance, as did AJ (not even an actor). You will laugh at some point. However I think the video has more potential as some Harry Potter Viral Youtube thing, that it might not get. I do however see sequel.
The special effects were done in After Effects. I motion tracked a lens flair and used a AE lightening strike. Edited in FCP 7. I think a lesson to be learned here is that the more time you put in pre-production (logistics like where you are shooting, shot lists, etc..) will reflect in the final product.
Also shout out to Serena Kerrigan for cinematography, it was not an easy spot to shoot at, especially without a tripod. Her videos can be viewed here. http://vimeo.com/user5331206
Hope everyone gets a kick out of the video.
I’m Not Harry Potter
Production Notes;
Aaron and I wanted to shoot something quick and easy, so using NYC’s landscape I wrote a short skit based off the improv game “Park Bench”
We shot the video on a Canon 7D and used two lens, but I forget the focal lengths.. I’ll check.
It was a lot of fun to shoot, in case you can’t already tell. Some of the stuff is improv by Quinn, and I can’t stop laughing. I actually just realized that Aaron laughs at the end of one of the shots.. Damn, should have cut that out…or…did I do that on purpose?
Hope you laugh. This is the first of several summertime shorts Aaron and I plan on producing.
